“Flash!†you whisper as loud as you dare, ready to fire into the darkened glade.
"Thunder, thunder!†is the meek reply and you lower your weapon slightly before heading towards the voice. A friendly face emerges from the darkness and you instantly recognize your fellow paratrooper, Frank Greene. He jumped from the same C-47 as you and seems to be in a similar predicament.
You exchange warm greetings and assess your mutual situation. Glad to have the company, you both head towards your objective at the Douve river. Following a southwestern course, you approach an antiaircraft battery manned by four Germans. They are strafing the sky with tracer rounds, the arc of the shell trajectory cutting a bright line through the heavens. There are still planes and men in the sky and this gun is a threat to them both. It is a daunting task for just two soldiers. You check your ammo supply, clutch at a grenade and decide what to do.
