Was Coco Chanel a Nazi Spy?

Gerald D. Swick

Was fashion icon Coco Chanel a spy for the Nazis? That’s the claim made in Sleeping with the Enemy, a new book by Hal Vaughan, published this week by Knopf.

Vaughan, a former journalist and veteran of World War II and Korea, claims that while looking for something else he found information in a Paris police archive identifying Chanel as a Nazi agent codenamed Westminster. That set him off on a search through archives in Germany, Italy, Britain and the US. He presents what he found in Sleeping with the Enemy.

His previous books include Doctor to the Resistance, about an American physician and his family in occupied Paris, and FDR’s 12 Apostles: The Spies Who Paved the Way for the Invasion of North Africa.
