Tedium and Terror – The Story of Every War
Long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror. That description of war has been true since before the days of Alexander the Great.
Here’s a link to a New York Times article, Between Firefights, Jokes, Sweat and Tedium, that shows the old maxim still applies today. Delete references to Facebook, cellphones and modern rules of engagement; change the song lyrics to something from the first third of the 20th century, and this story could be about G. I.’s in World War II, fighting boredom as well as the enemy.
Thanks for that quote – just what I was looking for.
