Tankfest 2006!

Armchair General

Regular readers of the Armchair General website will recall my previous article focussing on the Bovington Tank Museum. In fact, that was my very first piece for this site, and here we are, nearly seventy articles later, I’m back where I started, at Bovington.

This time however, my trip wasn’t to see some static displays, although there were numerous Tanks and AFVs around to be explored, this time was different – for this was the 2006 TankFest, a mobile display of vehicles old and new, small and large.

And what a display – with a grandstand view from the Press area, I’m able to bring you lots of exciting pictures, and some videos too. To view the full set of pictures (nearly eight-hundred), you can visit the ACG Image Gallery here.

You will also find the following links of interest:

The following images were taken with a Sony DSC-H1 at 5.0 Megapixels. Click on the thumbnails for larger images.

So let’s start off with the obligatory picture of yours-truly with his ACG just by the edge of the display arena.

With the museum itself just a short distance away, the central arena in which the Tanks would perform was surrounded by attractions for visitors, static vehicles on display and military re-enactors, some of whom had set up camp.

Stalls selling all sorts of military paraphernalia were in abundance – and there were even a few Daleks from Doctor Who – themselves a futuristic form of tank (OK, it’s just an excuse to include a picture of a Dalek, although this inflatable one is sagging a bit).

Pristine exhibits from the museum and from private collections were arrayed in the drizzling rain that seems to blight British summer-time.
