Medal of Honor Recipient Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Arthur Petry
On July 12, Army Ranger Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Arthur Petry of Santa Fe, New Mexico, will receive the Medal of Honor for actions in Afghanistan. He is only the second living recipient during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The first seven medals for those conflicts were awarded posthumously.
On May 26, 2008, while serving with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, during a daylight raid to capture what the Army called "a high-value target," Petry was wounded crossing a courtyard.
When a grenade subsequently landed a few feet from two other wounded Rangers, Petry, despite his own wounds, grabbed it to throw back at the enemy. His right hand was catastrophically amputated. He applied a tourniquet and and reported his injury over the radio.
