MAP OF THE MONTH: D-Day and Battles for Normandy

Armchair General has partnered with The Map as History, a company that produces outstanding animated maps with accompanying narration. Each month, a link to one of their animated maps will be featured on the ACG site.

This month’s map explores the D-Day landings and the battles for Normandy in the summer of 1944. The map displays in animated fashion the locations of the five invasion beaches where the Allies came ashore, then shows their routes of advance from early June to late August 1944, when Paris was liberated and British and Canadian armies crossed the Seine.

  1. Hey nice map, where are the Canadians? There were five beaches on D-Day – Canada had one of them – Juno. Where is Juno? Juno and its’ 10% of total forces? Juno and the country with the highest percent per capita of any of the three major countries invading? We want Juno! We want Juno!

  2. I retract my previous e-mail. Sorry I did not click on the animation, all is forgiven by me and please forgive me my rude remarks.

  3. Will not be in Normandy next week for the 68th anniversary. Still working with D-Day maps. The ones I have work great with google-earth. Almost like being there, and not leaving the desk!
