Last U.S. World War I Vet Dies at 110
Frank Buckles has gone "over there:" The last surviving American veteran of World War I died early Sunday morning, February 27, 2011, in West Virginia. He turned 110 on February 1.
Buckles was also a civilian POW of the Japanese during World War II. For many years he has been an advocate for the creation of a World War I memorial on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
