Holiday Shopping Guide 2010: Games, Books, and More

wpengine

The holiday season often brings a frantic flurry of activity to look for the perfect gift to give someone else. Those of us who are gamers know what we like. However we also recognize that, no matter well-intended our loved ones are, unless they share the same passion for gaming they probably don’t know the difference between World of Warcraft and World of Tanks.

That’s where we’re here to help. The online editors and staff at Armchair General have taken some time to put together a holiday buying guide which should help friends and family find something more appropriate than a gift certificate to the mall.

We’ve tried to be eclectic in our focus, and the subjects range from things that will please the military history buff to the geeky gamer and quite possibly gamers in between. We hope to offer a few things in a variety of categories that, when the moment arrives and they ask, "What would you like for Christmas (or any other holiday of your choice)?" You can simply direct a browser to this article, or one of its specific pages, and say "anything here".

  1. Civilization V is a thoroughly buggy game, and thoroughly lacking in any sort of viable mechanics. It’s as if the developers forgot the basic foundations of their series, since every mechanic, when traced back to the heart of the game, is ultimately unstable and poorly thought out.

Even the one unit per tile mechanic is, while not obviously at first, a fundamentally broken and poorly implemented idea.

If you still want a superb empire-building game, you’re better off getting Civilization IV, which possesses decent graphics and perfect, varied, balanced mechanics. Plus it has the best theme song for a game, ever.

I’d pass on Civ V. Starcraft II, however, is a triple platinum title, and worth every dime.

  2. You missed a very good book- Caroline Princess Of Wales & Other Forgotten People of History by Strategic Publishing,USA.
    Similar to Skulldugery.
